Kenner, LA Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Kenner does not run a general microchip mandate for cats and dogs; the identification requirement in Sec. 4-89(5) is tied specifically to an animal already declared fierce, dangerous or vicious under Division 7 of Chapter 4. Once the administrative hearing officer issues that declaration, the owner has fifteen days from the order to pay for identification, choosing either a tattoo bearing the animal's license number or mark, applied by a licensed veterinarian or another person approved by the animal shelter, or insertion of a microchip.

The director of code enforcement may designate the specific location on the animal where a tattoo goes, and that location is noted in the animal's licensing file. If the owner does not pay the identification fee within the fifteen-day window, Sec. 4-89(5) treats the animal as forfeited to the city. Identification sits alongside Kenner's other conditions for licensing a dangerous or vicious animal under Sec. 4-89: at least $500,000.00 in liability insurance covering property damage or bodily injury, a posted warning sign visible from the street, and a signed owner statement promising to maintain the insurance, keep a compliant enclosure, and notify the department if the animal escapes, attacks, dies or changes hands.

None of these identification or insurance conditions apply to a dog or cat that has never been declared dangerous or vicious, so an ordinary Kenner pet owner has no microchip obligation under this chapter.
