Gardena, CA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 10.28.260 of the Gardena Municipal Code is short and absolute: unless another part of the code specifically allows it, no one may park a vehicle in any portion of a required front yard or a required side yard on the street side of a lot. The zoning code sets those required yard depths and widths by district, so the parking ban follows whatever setback line the zoning provisions establish for the property; parking on the grass, dirt or landscaped strip inside that line is a violation even if the vehicle is registered, running, or only there overnight.

The section carves out one exception: temporary standing or parking in a permitted driveway is allowed, so a car in the driveway itself, rather than beside it on unpaved yard, stays lawful. Community Development and code enforcement staff cite yard-parking violations alongside related nuisance and property-maintenance provisions, and the Gardena Police Department can also act on complaints tied to blocked sightlines or obstructed access. Because § 10.28.260 states no penalty of its own, enforcement falls back on the citywide general penalty in § 1.16.010: a first infraction tops out at $100, a second within a year at $200, and a third at $500, with a fourth chargeable as a misdemeanor carrying up to a $1,000 fine or six months in jail.

Property owners who repeatedly park on unpaved yard areas can also be referred through the nuisance-abatement process under Title 8 if the condition is tied to a broader property-maintenance complaint.
