Historic-Cultural Monuments
Albemarle County created the Monticello Historic District (MHD), a dedicated zoning classification under County Code § 18-11.1, to protect the parcels that once belonged to Thomas Jefferson and to regulate uses tied to operating Monticello as a historic house museum recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The district caps density at one dwelling per 21 acres and building height at 45 feet.
